Best Heated Base Layers of 2022

Heated base layers can make a great addition to your heated apparel arsenal. They are ideal for anyone who wants to stay warm while running, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, hunting, ride a motorcycle, or just going to work at a job that requires you to be outdoors frequently.

Currently, there are only a few heated base layers available that we can recommend and almost all of them are base layer shirts although we did manage to find one unisex base layer set that met our standards. The biggest issue with heated base layers is battery life, if you have to crank them up to high you will be out of heat in about 2 hours which is not really enough if you are spending the day skiing or sitting in a deer stand. However, battery life extends to 6 hours if the low setting will keep you warm enough.

We looked at a wide variety of heated base layers but could only find four that we would be happy to recommend.  Following is our list of the top four heated base layers of 2022:

Volt Heated Base Layer
Action Heat Heated Base Layer
Sunwill Heated Base Layer

ActionHeat Men's Heated Base Layer

ActionHeat makes a wide variety of heated clothing and get great reviews. This base layer keeps that tradition going with almost everyone that tested it raving about the heat it produces. This base layer shirt is available in a men’s and women’s version.

The ActionHeat base layer has three heating panels with two on the chest and a large panel on the back. On high, the heat can hit 130°F. It is both lightweight and comfortable but doesn’t fit super snug like some long underwear shirts. The 6000mAh 5V power bank will keep the heat flowing for around 2 hours on high, 3.5 hours on medium and up to 4.5 hours on low. The battery pack has a USB port so it can be used to charge your phone if necessary.

Reviewers were mixed on this base layer. While most people loved the heat it cranked out and found it very comfortable there were complaints that the heating zone on the back was a bit small. The fit may run a bit big but there is a very detailed sizing chart so be sure to measure yourself before ordering. It is also not as snug as you might expect for long underwear so consider ordering one size down if you want a tighter fit.

Sunwill Heated Base Layer

Sunwill is another well-respected brand in the heated apparel industry, their heated hat is one of our favorites. Their unisex heated thermal underwear is one of the best ones that we looked at, producing plenty of heat with a great look while also being super comfy.

This long underwear set is made from 100 percent cotton and has four heat zones total, 2 in the thermal underwear shirt and two more in pants. The two ultra-large capacity 7.4v3000mAh rechargeable lithium battery packs can get the heat up to almost 150°F but the battery life is not super impressive, most reviewers got around two hours on high and up to 5 hours on low.

The reviews were pretty stellar for this pair of heated long underwear with everyone raving about the heat they produced. Many reviewers said they never needed to turn the heat up past low or medium to stay warm even in very cold conditions. The majority of complaints revolved around sizing and many people recommended ordering two sizes up from what you would normally wear.

Venture Womens Heated Base

Venture Heat has been in the heated clothing business since 2003 when it was founded in Venice Beach, California. Their heated garments always get great reviews, and this base layer keeps that tradition going. This is available in a men’s and women’s version.

This heated long underwear is made from polyester and spandex which allows it to stretch to the perfect fit as well as provide plenty of flexibility when you are out on the slopes, sitting in a duck blind or hiking up a mountain. This is the latest version of Venture’s heated base layer which comes with 20 percent larger heating panels.

This base layer has three heat zones, one across the abdomen, a large one on the back and a third that runs across the shoulders. A 5.0V 5000 mAh battery cranks up the heat but it doesn’t last too long if you run it on high. You can get about 6 hours out of the battery on low but it drops down to 2 hours if you run it on high the whole time. This base layer is machine washable as long as it is in a laundry bag but should be air dried.

Reviewers raved about the heat but the battery life was a sticking point for many. Some claimed they only managed three to four hours on low and less than two hours on high. It is possible to purchase another battery to extend the heat which is probably a good idea if you plan on being out on cold for a long period of time.

Volt Tactical Unisex Heated Top

This heated base layer is our favorite, it produces great heat, is super comfortable, and gets zero negative reviews. It’s made from brushed fleece lining and poly spandex which gives it a nice snug fit.

The Tactical Base Layer has four large heating panels, all of them are located on the back of the shirt. It uses a VB560 5v 6000mAh USB power bank to keep the heat flowing. Like most of the base layers we looked at, the battery is not going to last all day. It will stay hot for around 2 hours on high but can put out hit for almost 8 hours on low.

This heated base layer gets nothing but rave reviews from both men and women. Everyone said it generated plenty of heat and was super comfortable to wear. The only negatives that came up is the size of the pocket for the battery with one reviewer wishing it was a bit larger so they could use a bigger battery so they could stay in their deer stand a bit longer.

All in all, this is the best heated base layer we could find, you will not regret putting this one in your closet.
